Visionless Art

Carrie Beckwith started life as a musician  playing any instrument she could get hold of and gained various music qualifications including Grade 8 Singing (Musical theatre 2002 and Rock School 2009) and an Advanced Diploma in Popular Music. She studied an Honours Degree in Music Theatre at Leeds University, but had a change of direction and transfered to Arts Education in her final year.

Carrie discovered Visual Art during her degree studies and started learning the basics of photography and digital art.

Due to a rare reaction to medication, Carrie lost her sight for almost 2 years.  It was during this period that she discovered painting, ceramics and sculpture.  Carrie continued with her photography whilst blind, creating a unique style of images focussed on light, colour and movement rather than typical photographical technqiues.

In 2009 Carrie was nominated for and won the DADA (Deaf and Disabled Arts) "Emerging Artist" award.  She won the public vote for her dedication in breaking down barriers in the art world which prevented visually impaired people from accessing visual arts even after regaining her site earlier in the year.

Carrie is now focussing on developing her photoshop skills as well as trying new artforms including beading and jewellry making.
